Okayama White Peaches

Elegant, snow-white peaches carefully cultivated to perfection, making them an ideal gift

Among the many varieties of peaches grown in Okayama Prefecture, white peaches are the most widely cultivated. This variety was developed in 1901 by improving upon the Shanghai Suimitsu peach. It became one of Okayama’s signature specialties thanks to its exceptionally pale skin, delicate flesh, and wonderfully smooth texture—qualities rarely found in peaches from other growing regions.

The most distinctive feature of Okayama white peaches is their remarkably elegant whiteness. The secret lies in a traditional cultivation method unique to the region: each peach is carefully covered with a paper bag while growing. Protected from direct sunlight, the fruit does not develop the usual reddish coloring. Instead, it retains its translucent white appearance and develops a fine, smooth texture. The bags also protect the peaches from wind, rain, insects, and other potential damage, helping farmers produce fruit of exceptional beauty and quality.

The main season for Okayama white peaches runs from mid-July to mid-August. Popular varieties include Hikawa Hakuho, Hanayome, Hakuho, and Shimizu Hakuto. Each offers its own balance of sweetness, fragrance, juiciness, and texture, making peach tasting a delightful part of a summer visit to Okayama.

Popular Varieties of Okayama White Peaches

Kanōiwa Hakuto

Kanōiwa Hakuto is an early-season peach discovered as a natural branch mutation of the Asama Hakuto variety. It is known for its abundant juice and high sugar content. With little fibrous texture, its soft flesh practically melts in the mouth, offering a wonderfully smooth eating experience.

Hakuho

Hakuho peaches have beautiful milky-white flesh with a subtle yellow tint. Their flesh is thick, finely textured, and exceptionally soft. With little acidity and plenty of rich, sweet juice, they are especially appealing to those who enjoy mellow, juicy peaches.

Shimizu Hakuto

Shimizu Hakuto is one of Okayama’s most celebrated white peach varieties and originated in the Ichinomiya district of Okayama City. It is prized for its almost translucent white skin, refined fragrance, abundant sweetness, and juicy flesh that melts in the mouth.

Ripening around mid-August, Shimizu Hakuto is also a popular seasonal gift, particularly for Japan’s traditional summer gift-giving season known as ochūgen.

Okayama Yume Hakuto

Developed in Okayama, Yume Hakuto is a newer variety gaining popularity as a next-generation representative of the prefecture’s white peaches. It offers high sugar content, low acidity, and a rich, satisfying sweetness. Its large size and attractive appearance also make it a favorite among peach lovers.

Hakurei

Hakurei is a late-season variety that helps bring the white peach season to a close. One of its advantages is its good keeping quality. Carefully grown under protective paper bags, the peaches develop pure white, finely textured flesh. Their gentle sweetness, soft consistency, and lack of astringency have earned them a loyal following.

Best Time to Enjoy Okayama White Peaches

Okayama white peaches are generally in season from mid-July through mid-August. Because different varieties ripen at different times, visitors can enjoy a succession of distinctive flavors throughout the summer. Whether eaten fresh or presented as a gift, these delicately fragrant peaches are among the most prized seasonal specialties of Okayama.
