Kinmando: Kibi Dengaku

A Beloved Best-Selling Treat Enjoyed for More Than 30 Years

When people think of Okayama, one of Japan’s best-known folktales, Momotaro, or the Peach Boy, often comes to mind. Inspired by the kibi dango dumplings featured in this story, Kinmando’s Kibi Dengaku is a distinctive local confection shaped like traditional dengaku skewered food.

This popular Okayama specialty has earned widespread recognition, including the Prime Minister’s Award at the 19th National Confectionery Exposition in 1977. Its appeal lies in its nostalgic flavor and satisfying texture. The mildly sweet mochi is soft yet pleasantly chewy, with generous pieces of fragrant walnut tucked inside. Each dumpling is coated in roasted soybean flour, or kinako, which adds a warm, nutty aroma.

Individually wrapped in convenient, bite-sized portions, Kibi Dengaku is easy to enjoy as a snack and makes an excellent souvenir to share with family, friends, or colleagues. For another flavor to try, look for the matcha version, which offers a refreshing green tea twist on this beloved classic.
