Ryokan Temari: Traditional Japanese Steamed Sweet

An exquisite confection crafted with care and generations of traditional expertise

Ryokan Temari is a refined Japanese sweet made by Kashidokoro Hirai, a long-established confectionery founded in 1912. This traditional steamed bun, known as jōyo manjū, is inspired by the gentle spirit of Ryokan, a beloved Buddhist monk known for his kindness toward children.

Ryokan believed that the innocent hearts of children reflected the true heart of the Buddha. According to stories passed down through generations, he delighted in playing with children, joining them in games such as hide-and-seek and temari, a traditional Japanese handball game. Inspired by these heartwarming tales, the confectionery created Ryokan Temari, a sweet shaped around the image of a traditional temari ball and designed as a memorable souvenir from Kurashiki.

Carefully Selected Ingredients and Traditional Craftsmanship

The soft outer layer is made by combining grated Japanese yam with finely milled jōyo flour, produced by washing and drying non-glutinous rice before grinding it into a fine powder. Carefully selected rice flour from Okayama Prefecture is also added to create a delicate dough, which is then steamed to achieve its tender texture.

Inside, each bun contains a special smooth red bean paste made from carefully selected azuki beans from Hokkaido, along with one whole candied chestnut. The chestnuts are slowly simmered to preserve their exceptionally soft texture and rich, fragrant flavor.

Each bite offers a gentle, melt-in-the-mouth texture, with the subtle sweetness of the outer layer, the smooth red bean filling, and the rich flavor of the chestnut coming together in perfect balance. The result is an elegant Japanese confection that is sweet without being overpowering.

Award-Winning Kurashiki Souvenir

Ryokan Temari has earned recognition for its quality and craftsmanship, receiving the Minister’s Award of Excellence at the 22nd National Confectionery Exposition and the Grand Prize at the second Okayama Prefecture Creative Souvenir Contest.

For travelers visiting Kurashiki, this beautifully crafted sweet offers more than a taste of traditional Japanese confectionery. Its story, inspired by the compassionate monk Ryokan, adds a cultural touch that makes it a thoughtful gift or a delightful treat to enjoy during your visit.
