Sami Coast

Spend a Summer Day at Japan’s Oldest Beach Resort

Sami Coast is a seaside park located in Tamashima-Kurosaki, Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture. It is widely known as the site of Japan’s first designated swimming beach. Along with Shibukawa Beach in Tamano City, it is one of Okayama Prefecture’s best-known seaside destinations. The coast features a beautiful sandy shoreline selected for the “100 Best Beaches in Japan,” attracting visitors from across the prefecture and beyond during the summer swimming season.

Sami Coast is divided into West Beach and East Beach by Kurosaki Fishing Port. West Beach is particularly appealing, with a gently curving stretch of white sand extending for approximately 1,500 meters. Its palm trees, sandy shore, and calm Seto Inland Sea waters create a relaxing seaside atmosphere.

The History of Sami Coast

Sami Coast began attracting attention as Japan’s oldest swimming beach in 1880. A physician named Taien Sakata recognized the potential health benefits of seawater bathing and proposed establishing a bathing facility. Chikayuki Yoshida, the village head at the time, supported the idea and helped open the beach to visitors. This initiative is regarded as the beginning of organized sea bathing in Japan.

The original facility was established for therapeutic purposes. Initially, a temporary shelter was built for people seeking to improve their health through seawater bathing. In 1882, a more substantial facility was constructed, creating a proper bathing beach celebrated for its white sand and green pine trees.

Coastal Improvements and Recognition

Between 1983 and 1989, Sami Coast underwent an extensive artificial beach nourishment project that transformed the shoreline into a more attractive seaside resort. The project cost 1.6 billion yen and created what was described as Japan’s first artificially developed beach of its kind. Palm trees were planted to give the area a tropical atmosphere, further enhancing its appeal.

The improvements helped establish Sami Coast as one of Okayama Prefecture’s leading beach destinations. Its beautiful scenery was recognized through its selection for the “100 Best Beaches in Japan.” Today, the coast remains a popular summer retreat, while its sandy shoreline and views of the Seto Inland Sea can be enjoyed throughout the year.
