Hot Spring Properties and Benefits

Characteristics of the Spring Water

The spring is classified as a simple, mildly radioactive cold mineral spring with low osmotic pressure and a neutral pH. Its source temperature is 18.8°C. The water has a pale yellowish-brown color and is odorless and tasteless. It is also known as a radium spring or radon hot spring, and its mineral composition has been scientifically analyzed.

Traditionally Recognized Therapeutic Benefits

Kurashiki Yuga Onsen is traditionally associated with relief from a variety of ailments. General indications for bathing in hot springs of this type include neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, frozen shoulder, chronic digestive disorders, hemorrhoids, fatigue, sensitivity to cold, and general health maintenance.

As a therapeutic mineral spring, it has also been associated with conditions such as gout, high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, chronic cholecystitis, gallstones, chronic skin disorders, and chronic gynecological conditions. These are traditional indications for therapeutic bathing rather than guarantees of medical benefit; visitors with health concerns should consult a medical professional before bathing.

Mount Yuga and Its Religious Traditions

Mount Yuga has been a place of worship for more than 2,000 years. Known as Yuga-san, it was also visited by the lords of the Okayama Domain. From the Edo period through the Meiji period, pilgrims frequently combined visits to Mount Yuga with worship at Kotohira-gū in Kagawa Prefecture, a custom known as ryōmairi, or “visiting both sacred sites.”

Today, Mount Yuga remains a popular destination for worshippers seeking protection from misfortune. The nearby temple and shrine preserve a distinctive religious heritage that makes the area more than simply a hot spring retreat.

History of Kurashiki Yuga Onsen

Origins and Early Recognition

The history of Kurashiki Yuga Onsen is said to date back to the Heian period (794–1185). During the Kamakura period (1185–1333), the Buddhist monk Shunjōbō Chōgen helped bring the spring to wider attention. The waters became known as a hot spring with remarkable spiritual properties.

In 1914, the spring water underwent a mineral analysis at the national Tokyo Hygiene Laboratory. The results identified it as a simple radioactive spring, providing scientific confirmation of its mineral characteristics.

In 1993, Kurashiki Yuga Onsen Hotel Mitomo opened, establishing the foundation of the modern hot spring destination. Combining local traditions with contemporary comforts, the hotel has since welcomed visitors seeking a relaxing retreat in the historic surroundings of Mount Yuga.
