Bisei Astronomical Observatory

A Spectacular Destination for Stargazing Beneath a Brilliant Night Sky

Bisei Astronomical Observatory is a public observatory located in Bisei Town, Ibara City, Okayama Prefecture. Situated on elevated ground on the Kibi Plateau, it offers panoramic views in every direction, providing an expansive view of the sky. The observatory is known for its impressive 101-centimeter-aperture telescope, making it one of Japan’s notable astronomical facilities. It welcomes a wide range of visitors, from beginners and amateur astronomers to those interested in more advanced astronomical observations.

Features of Bisei Astronomical Observatory

The observatory houses the largest telescope available for public viewing in Okayama Prefecture. Its principal equipment includes a 101-centimeter optical reflecting telescope, a cooled CCD camera, and a spectrograph, enabling a variety of astronomical observations.

The grounds also feature a life-size model of an armillary sphere, an ancient astronomical instrument made in China and assembled by Chinese technicians. The facility was constructed at a total project cost of 458.4 million yen, including 143 million yen for the telescope and its dome, and 15 million yen for the armillary sphere. These investments helped establish an observatory equipped for high-quality stargazing and research, attracting astronomy enthusiasts from near and far.

Bisei Town and the Protection of Its Starry Skies

Bisei Town is widely known throughout Japan for the beauty of its night skies. To preserve this natural treasure, the town enacted an ordinance to prevent light pollution and protect the visibility of the stars.

On occasions such as Tanabata, the traditional Star Festival, visitors gather late into the night hoping to see the Milky Way. Nearby, the historical theme park known as Chūsei Yumegahara also holds a Tanabata festival, drawing additional visitors to the area.

Stargazing Sessions and Events

The observatory organizes the Hoshizora Park Stargazing Session at Ibara City Hoshizora Park, approximately five kilometers away. These sessions take place on the second or third Wednesday of each month. Participation is free, but advance reservations are required.

Nighttime observation sessions are also held at the observatory itself. When the weather is clear, visitors can use telescopes to explore the night sky. Depending on the season and viewing conditions, observations may include the Moon, planets, bright first-magnitude stars, double stars, star clusters, and nebulae.

Main Facilities and Equipment

The 101-Centimeter Telescope

The observatory’s main telescope is a 101-centimeter reflecting telescope operated by staff members, who also explain the celestial objects being observed. It is particularly well suited to viewing the Moon, planets, bright stars, and star clusters, offering visitors an impressive introduction to astronomical observation.

Stargazing Deck

The outdoor stargazing deck, located beside the observatory dome, provides another opportunity to explore the night sky. Staff members operate large binoculars and telescopes to help visitors observe seasonal celestial objects. On clear days, the broad panorama extends as far as the Seto Inland Sea, creating a memorable setting for stargazing.

Star Wall

The first-floor lobby features a large screen known as the Star Wall. Astronomical photographs and videos of shooting stars are projected regularly. Short programs, including “From Bisei Town to the Universe” and “A Journey on Spaceship Earth,” introduce visitors to the wonders of space and encourage an interest in astronomy.

Smartphone Telescope

A small telescope is installed in the observatory’s courtyard, allowing visitors to take astronomical photographs using their smartphones. However, as of February 2024, the equipment was undergoing adjustments and might not have been operational. Visitors are advised to check its availability in advance.

4D2U: A Virtual Journey Through Space

When bad weather makes outdoor observations impossible, visitors can experience a simulated journey through the universe using the 4D2U three-dimensional visualization system in the first-floor training room. This alternative allows guests to explore the wonders of space even when the sky is cloudy or rainy.

Guidelines for Using the Stargazing Deck

Visitors are welcome to take their time enjoying the night sky from the observation deck. However, camera tripods, flash photography, chairs, and leisure sheets are not permitted, as they may obstruct the view or disturb other observers.

Stargazing session times vary according to the season and weather conditions. Checking the schedule before visiting is recommended to make the most of the experience.

Discover the Night Sky in Bisei

With its powerful telescope, knowledgeable staff, and wide range of educational facilities, Bisei Astronomical Observatory offers an engaging introduction to the universe for visitors of all experience levels. Combined with Bisei Town’s commitment to protecting its dark skies, the observatory is an excellent destination for anyone hoping to see stars, planets, and other celestial wonders far from the glare of city lights.
