Hiruzen Wine

Elegant Highland Wine with the Wild Character of Japanese Wild Grapes

Yamabudo, or Japanese wild grape, is a grape variety native to Japan and is relatively rare in western Japan. It is known for being difficult to cultivate and ferment into wine. In the Hiruzen Highlands, however, winemaking began after growers selected just three vines from more than 1,000 wild grapevines growing naturally in the area and began cultivating them.

At Hiruzen Winery, these distinctive Japanese wild grapes are used generously to create wines with a character all their own. The region enjoys different climatic conditions from northern Japan, including longer hours of sunshine, which help produce grapes with a richer sweetness. The resulting wines retain the grapes’ robust, wild character while offering a refined and elegant taste. The winery remains dedicated to its craft, continuing a tradition of winemaking that has spanned more than a quarter of a century.

Discover the Winery, Shop, and Café

Hiruzen Winery combines its wine production facilities with a shop and café, making it an inviting destination for visitors exploring the Hiruzen Highlands. At the shop, Koanie, guests can browse a carefully selected range of products, including the winery’s own wines and fruit confitures.

The café serves dishes and drinks made with local ingredients, as well as soft-serve ice cream featuring Japanese wild grapes. Visitors can also view parts of the winemaking process through glass, including the wine storage room and bottling operations, offering a closer look at the craftsmanship behind each bottle.

For travelers interested in regional flavors, Hiruzen Wine is a wonderful opportunity to discover a distinctive Japanese wine made from grapes native to the country, while enjoying the scenery and local produce of the Hiruzen Highlands.
