Okayama New Pione Grapes

Large, juicy Japanese grapes bursting with sweetness and rich, fragrant flavor

Okayama Prefecture is Japan’s leading producer of Pione grapes. This popular Japanese grape variety was developed by crossing Kyoho grapes with Cannon Hall Muscat grapes. The result is a distinctive fruit with large, deep-purple berries, an appealing fragrance, a satisfying texture, and an abundance of sweet juice balanced by a gentle acidity.

Thanks to their rich, well-rounded flavor, Pione grapes have become one of Japan’s most popular grape varieties. The name “Pione” comes from the Italian word for “pioneer,” reflecting the variety’s distinctive character.

What Makes New Pione Grapes Special?

Today, seedless Pione grapes are marketed as “New Pione”, making them especially convenient to enjoy. The berries are impressively large, with some weighing more than 20 grams each. Their sugar content reaches at least 16 degrees Brix, delivering a pronounced sweetness complemented by an exceptionally appealing aroma.

Each bite offers a delightful combination of juicy flesh, rich sweetness, and refreshing acidity. These qualities make New Pione grapes a wonderful seasonal treat and a popular choice for gifts from Okayama.

Season

New Pione grapes are generally in season from August through October. During this period, visitors can enjoy the grapes at their freshest, savoring the distinctive flavor that has made Okayama famous throughout Japan.
